Centering A Critical Curriculum of Care During Crises

This keynote calls for reimagining online education (and indeed education as a whole) in ways that move away from outcomes-based design approaches, and towards more critical curriculum design approaches that center care, empathy, equity and social justice. Away from single pathway pedagogies in for-credit education, and towards more open, connectivist, agentic, and culturally responsive pedagogies.

None of these alone is new, but the COVID-19 crisis has forced us to question our priorities, and I suggest there has been a shift in the literacies required by teachers, students, and administrators to navigate these unprecedented circumstances. This keynote builds on the work of Virtually Connecting’s Intentionally Equitable Hospitality, Equity Unbound, and previous work on critical digital pedagogy and social justice-oriented open educational practices.

UDL Design Hacks for Online Courses and Programs

How many of your students come into your online learning environments fully prepared, having done all of the reading and eager to take an active part in the course? Yeah, mine never used to, either.

The reasons for this lack of student engagement and preparation can seem obvious: students’ laziness, their lack of discipline, or their desire to do the minimum possible. But these reasoned hunches are just plain wrong.

In this workshop, you’ll learn the real reason why learners aren’t as engaged as we’d like them to be (spoiler alert: it’s time management), and then you will learn, practice, and apply the principles of universal design for learning (UDL) with one of your own lessons or units. We’ll do this work together in order to lower barriers to fuller engagement, study, and participation for your students. This workshop is highly interactive. Please bring or have access to your lecture notes, a lesson plan, or a syllabus for one of your online courses or learning interactions, and we will address real challenges together through small teaching and design changes.

Death by Discourse: Avenging Online Discussions

Setting Good (Behavioral) Defaults: How to Influence Student Expectations to Facilitate Better Learning Behaviors

Throw Out the Bathwater but Keep the Baby: A Case for Synchronous Class Sessions

Despite widespread availability of online synchronous tools, only 4 percent of faculty integrate regular sessions in their online courses. Summer Data Science Online: Building Bridges Through Collaboration In The Liberal Arts

A defining feature of a liberal arts education is learning through strong interpersonal collaborations among faculty and students; the emphasis is on connection, which can occur in person and online.  In summer 2019, several leading liberal arts colleges in the Liberal Arts Collaborative for Digital Innovation (LACOL, https://lacol.net) collaborated to offer the first iteration of a fully online, team-taught course Introduction to Data Science for their undergraduates. Student demand for seats in the class exceeded supply; retention after add/drop was 100%. Student performance and feedback indicate success in reaching many course and project goals, with room for growth in future offerings. In this session, members of the LACOL Summer Data Science Class team will share an overview of the course design, implementation, and the lessons we learned in summer 2019.

Using Empathy, Genuine And Unconditional Positive Regard To Build Safety For Discussing Difficult Topics In The Online Classroom

We propose a new theoretical model using Carol Rogers conditions for relationship. Using empathy, genuineness, and unconditional positive regard to facilitate meaningful life-changing dialogue in the online teaching environment where difficult dialogue regarding social justice issues involving race, class, gender, sexuality, ableism, and other non-hegemonic identities occurs.Yet, Tausch and Huls (2014) found that 60% of university students believed they received no empathy from their professors. Similarly, Rogers, Lyons, and Tausch (2014) found that student feelings or emotions are rarely addressed in the classroom.

Today, attendees at conferences like OLC Innovate can expect a commitment to and presentations on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Advocacy. Often left out of the conversation, though, is language. This session overviews the importance of this topic in teaching and learning and reviews research related to linguistic discrimination/ bias and educational outcomes. Along the way, participants will be asked to participate in language-related activities, designed to get them questioning their language-based biases and increase their understanding of linguistic diversity. Participants will leave with practical ideas to implement in their lives to move towards more linguistically inclusive and equitable learning environments.

Clark and Academic Continuity: The Numbers


In the last two weeks, we have transformed much of how we teach, learn, and work. We wanted to share some interesting numbers around how our community has made this change.

During the week of March 23rd, the Clark Community…

  • Participated in over 2,600 unique online meetings totaling over 13,500 person-hours (a two hour meeting with five people would be 10 person-hours)
  • Read over 20% more email than an average spring semester week
  • Increased the utilization of Moodle over 50%
  • Added over 500 videos to Panopto and viewed almost 2,000 hours of video
  • Increased the utilization of our VPN over 600% across 400 unique daily users

Across the globe, we’ve seen Zoom grow from 10 million daily meeting participants in December to over 200 million today. Microsoft Teams saw in a growth rate of over 500% worldwide virtually overnight.

Finally, all of us in ITS would like to thank you for your continued focus on information security, as well as your patience and willingness to adapt to new processes and technology in this unprecedented time. Our rapid adoption of products like Zoom and Teams, as well as adapting how we all learn, teach, and work was only possible with our shared commitment to doing whatever was needed to make it happen.

We have not only adapted to our world today, but we’re learning new things we’ll carry forward well after the history of COVID-19 is written.

Online Meetings: Troubleshooting your Connection


With many people joining Zoom and Teams sessions over recent weeks, we’ve had questions about how to best ensure a clear, consistent connection.

Poor connections can impact your, and your participants’ experience in many ways – from stuttering video, to audio falling in and out, to freezing screens.

While every session, every connection and every device is different, there are some things that you can try if you’re regularly experiencing connection issues.

Before the Session

  • If you’re using a desktop or laptop, connect your device directly to your router with a network cable. This will help keep your connection stable, reliable and less patchy than WiFi.
  • If you are using a mobile device, or can’t connect directly to your router, try to move around your home to find a spot with a stronger connection. The general rule is the closer you are to your router, the stronger the connection. Additionally, some architectural features can cause some areas in your home to have a weaker connection
  • Consider what else is streaming on your internet. Close any applications that you don’t need during your session. If others in your house are using the internet ask them to refrain from streaming content during that time (Netflix, music, etc)
  • If you’re having audio issues in many sessions, be sure to run through a test prior to meetings to ensure you have the best setup possible.

During the Session

Zoom: Sharing Recordings from Panopto

If you’re running synchronous sessions with your students via Zoom, you should plan on recording them to make available to students who can’t attend in real-time. However, we also need to keep our FERPA obligations in mind when sharing those recordings.

When recording Zoom class sessions, you will have two options

  • Record to your computer
  • Record to the Cloud.

ITS’s recommendation is to record to the Cloud. This will save your recording to Panopto – Clark’s internal video streaming service. By default those recordings will be available only to you. However it will be easy to then move those recordings from your private Panopto folder, to your Course Panopto folder. This will allow access to these recordings to be restricted to the students enrolled in your course, and therefore protect the students privacy.

Zoom: First Steps

Once you have set up your Zoom account, and installed the client, here are some steps to get you started.

Find and Share Your Personal Meeting Details

There are a number of ways to find your personal meeting room information, but the details below will work on any device.

  1. Navigate to http://clarku.zoom.us/
  2. Click Sign In
  3. Enter your Clark account details
  4. You will then be on the your profile page.
  5. Click on the the Meetings option in the menu on the left side
  6. Click on the Personal Meeting Room tab at the top
  7. Click on the Copy Invite link, as seen below
  8. Share that information with your class via email or in Moodle.

Remember that students do not need a Zoom account to participate in your session. They should just click on the link in the invitation and follow the prompts

Schedule a Meeting

If you intend to use Zoom to meet with individuals or small groups for more personal/private discussions, we recommend Scheduling a Meeting. This will create a designated ‘room’ for that meeting and provide a different link to each student or group.

Log into Your Meeting

The quickest way to enter your Zoom room, is to click on the link that you shared with your students – whether your Personal Zoom Meeting link, or a Scheduled Meeting link.

When you click on that link, it will open a browser window. Follow the prompts to open/install the Zoom client. If it asks for your email and password, log in.

Get to Know your Zoom Room

Knowing the features and details of your Zoom room is important to running a successful session. Practicing is key, so considering hosting a Zoom Party for friends and family members. By having a sympathetic audience you can experiment with the technology and become more comfortable.

Panopto: Getting Started

Panopto is our cloud-based video streaming and lecture capture system that makes it easy to stream, record, and share videos.

Panopto can capture your screen, audio, and/or video from web-cams and other devices to record live lectures, student or guest presentations, demonstrations, and/or supplemental materials. You can also upload any previously created video to Panopto to be shared via a link or embedded into any web page, including Moodle.

Using Panopto to record videos gives faculty the freedom to create their own content and can increase the sense of faculty presence in an online course. Panopto integration with Moodle can be used as a powerful tool for increasing student engagement around video. Students can adjust the speed of video, comment on the video with other students in a discussion chat, take notes, create bookmarks, and participate in quizzes, all within the same screen.
