The Henry J. Leir Summer Research Scholarship

Jong Whan (Calvin) Choi, a double major in Political Science and Philosophy, participated in the Leir Luxembourg Program’s May Term 2009, and started interning with the newly founded Luxembourg American Cultural Society in Belgium, Wisconsin this summer. Calvin is working on immigration issues as well as establishing curricula for Americans who wish to learn more about The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. He will also be involved in preparing for and welcoming the Grand Duke, whose visit to the Luxembourg American Cultural Center will inaugurate the institution, established with generous funding by the Luxembourg government as its central cultural center in the U.S. Calvin was nominated for this award by Professor SunHee Kim Gertz.

Jason Carmignani, a major in Environmental Science, is interning this summer with the Centre Recherche Public-Gabriel Lippmann, one of the premier science institutions in Luxembourg, whose growth over the last five years has been exceptional, creating links with other research institutes in the US and Europe in the process. Its success is in no small part due to its focus on the environment and the Luxembourg government’s interest in promoting knowledge in this area. Jason will be working in the field of hydrochemistry, exploring the use of suspended sediment color to determine sediment sources. Jason was nominated for this award by Professor John Baker.
