Prof. Korstvedt embarks on musical fellowship in June

Benjamin M. Korstvedt, George N. and Selma U. Jeppson Professor of Music in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, will be a fellow at the tenth annual Institute For Advanced Studies in Music Scholarship at the University of Chicago, June 24-27. The Institute is an “an exclusive musical think tank dedicated to communal exploration at the highest level of inquiry” that meets annually in June. Its mission is to offer “distinguished music scholars from around the world a unique opportunity to teach, challenge, and learn from each other in a sustained and mutually supportive way.” Professor Korstvedt will participate in two workshops: Beethoven and the Aesthetics of Freedom, and The Musical Sublime.

“It is an honor to be invited to participate, and it will be an excellent opportunity for me to explore, share, and develop ideas with a group of colleagues in a challenging yet informal setting,” he says. “This sort of focused intellectual exchange is invaluable in testing and refining approaches to topics I have been working on and writing about for several years. The preparatory work has already been inspiring. The workshops themselves promise to be even more so.”
