Dining Services wins gold medal in statewide waste reduction competition

Clark University Dining Services has been awarded the Gold Medal in MassRecycle’s 2011 Best of the State competition!

MassRecycle, a coalition of industry, nonprofits, educational and other institutions, has been holding the prestigious contest for 16 years to recognize outstanding waste reduction and recycling programs. This is the first time Clark has entered the state-wide competition – and we won first place! Sharon Bort ’14 and Anthony Oduro ’12 researched and wrote the winning entry in the ‘Food Establishment’ category, highlighting the green initiatives of Clark Dining Services: composting (100% of pre and post-consumption food scraps); recycling program (100% of cans, bottles, plastic, paper & cardboard); as well as its waste vegetable oil, surplus food donation, trayless dining, water conservation and ‘from scratch’ food prep policies.

Heather Vaillette, Clark Dining Services Manager and Jenny Isler, Clark Sustainability Coordinator, collaborated with the team of interns on the final submission, one of more than 50 entries from throughout Massachusetts.

The Gold Medal will be presented at MassRecycle Awards Banquet on Nov. 15, 2011 in Lexington MA. The public is invited to attend.
