President Angel’s special message to the Clark community about September 11

To the Clark Community,

This coming Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. On this day, we will remember and honor all those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks that took place ten years ago. We will hold in our hearts the brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, and friends whose loved ones died on that terrible day. We will recall the acts of selfless heroism that took place on the streets of New York and elsewhere. We will treasure the memories of those who have passed.

Many of us who were on campus on September 11, 2001, remember vividly the moment when we first learned of the terrorist attacks. Rich Fields ’03 was undergraduate student council president in 2001. Rich has shared some reflections on his experience and memories of the Clark campus as we came together as a community in response to the tragedy.

Clark University alumnus Dan Trant ’84 died on September 11, 2001, a victim of the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York where he worked for the investment firm Cantor Fitzgerald. We remember Dan on this day and extend the support and care of the whole Clark family to Dan’s wife Kathy and their children. A two-time All-American basketball player at Clark, Dan was inducted posthumously into the Clark Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009. Dan’s legacy will be celebrated in a special section to be published Sunday on the Clark athletics website.

Memorial events will be held across the country this Sunday, but for many the day will be a time for quiet individual reflection. This is also a time for us to deepen our understanding of these terrorist attacks and all that has followed since then. In classes over the coming week, faculty may choose to bring to bear the insight and understanding of our own scholarship and teaching on these tragedies. We have a shared responsibility as a university to deepen critical awareness of both the context of these events and the responses that have followed.

On this day, we join as a community to remember, to honor, and to reflect with purpose and commitment.
