English Dept. announces winners of 2011 Leroy Allston Ames Essay Contest

The English Department is pleased to announce the winners of the 2011 Leroy Allston Ames Essay Contest.

Jennifer Cantin ’11 won the $500 First Prize for her entry “A Disclaimer on the Rights of Women:  Mary Wollstonecraft’s Class Conundrum.”

Lauren Onifer ’11 won the $250 Second Prize for her entry “Collins’ Deconstruction of Physiognomy in ‘The Moonstone’ .”

The Leroy Allston Ames Prize is an annual prize awarded to undergraduate students for essays on the literature and/or history of England from 1750 – 1900.  The prize is funded by a permanent endowment established in 1984 by Charles B. Cohn ’35 in honor of the late Professor Leroy Allston Ames.  Professor Ames taught English at Clark University from 1908 – 1944.
