On Tuesday evening at 6pm in English House, the English Department welcomed their new inductees into the Alpha Chi Xi Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta at Clark University. The ceremony was widely attended by many students, faculty, and friends. Professor Justin P. Shaw opened the ceremony by speaking to the audience about the history of Sigma Tau Delta, which is an international honors society with opportunities for thousands of dollars in scholarships, regional and national conferences, and internship and publication possibilities. Our members have been extraordinarily successful in receiving Sigma Tau Delta scholarships for study abroad and academic continuation and have creative work scheduled for publication in upcoming honors society journals. Professor Shaw also noted that students who are part of Sigma Tau Delta benefit from the membership with pizza parties!
This year’s Sigma Tau Delta’s President Juliana Hall and Vice President Melissa Seidemann conducted the ceremony. They spoke about Sigma Tau Delta’s great initiatives last year, including many new events that they hope to continue this year. This includes the book sales at the Pop-up, the winter finals study hall event, and the annual end of the year formal! These exciting events were organized at Sigma Tau Delta’s bi-weekly meetings, where they formed new bonds and friendships while working together. Hall and Seidemann expressed their hope to build on the creative and comfortable space that Sigma Tau Delta created last year by expanding their outreach with more activities.
To become a member of Sigma Tau Delta, rising junior and senior English majors are nominated by professors in the English department with criteria including outstanding GPA, character, citizenship, and demonstrated enthusiasm for the study of English. The new members who were inducted are:
Peyton Van Deusen
Lily ten Berge
Upon induction, all members receive a certificate, bookmark, and pin to recognize their lifetime membership.
After the induction, Sigma Tau Delta offered pizza and refreshments for all of the attendees. There was lively conversation and joyful laughter that filled the walls of English House. The English Department is looking forward to seeing what else Sigma Tau Delta accomplishes this year!
