Career Readiness Workshop

By Sally O'Brien

On October 9th, the English Department held a Career Readiness Workshop for English and Creative Writing students to explore career opportunities and get helpful resume advice. In this workshop, run by Midaly Carrasquillo Delgado from the Career Connections Center (CCC), students learned ways they can turn their passion for English and Creative Writing into a meaningful career, and what they can do during their time at Clark to set themselves up for success after graduation. This event helped bring clarity to students whose connection between major and career might not be obvious.

Midaly Carrasquillo Delgado from the CCC gave a wonderful presentation to our students.

This workshop explored the various diverse career paths English students can have, in many fields working for many different kinds of employers. If you are an English student who missed the workshop or want to explore further, you can see a comprehensive list of these career paths on the What Can I Do With This Major page, found on the CCC website. The presentation highlighted the importance of taking advantage of opportunities at Clark such as courses, internships, or clubs and organizations that align with your career goals, to gain experience and figure out what you enjoy. Another opportunity to learn about careers in English is the English Department’s annual Chowder Fest, where students hear alumni success stories and where their English and Creative Writing degrees took them.

Students also got advice on resume building and how to make their experiences work for them. They were asked to think about how their academic experiences translate to their careers, and how to tailor their resume to a fit a job or internship by highlighting jobs, campus involvement, skills, or even courses that taught relevant skills. Midaly emphasized that skills or experience that may seem ordinary to you can make you memorable and stand out to a hiring manager or interviewer, so you should include what makes you unique. If you need help or feedback on your resume, schedule an appointment or send your resume to the CCC!

If you are an English or Creative Writing student and want to do more career development, be sure to schedule an appointment with the CCC. They can help you with resumes, cover letters, job and internship search, mock interviews, and even getting free professional attire. Much thanks to Midaly and the CCC, and to all the students who showed up to take advantage of this event!
