Fall 2012 Course Schedule & Registration Information

Dear GSOM returning students,

I hope you are enjoying the summer and beautiful weather if you are around Worcester.  I am writing to confirm that the schedule for the Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 semesters is now posted for your review http://www.clarku.edu/gsom/currentstudents/courses/schedules.cfm .  Registration dates are at the top of the schedule.  As always there are a few important announcements and reminders to note as you prepare for next year.

Reminders

As you plan your schedule for the next academic year, it is easier if you use the process below:

  1. Review the degree requirements and update your progress using the check list http://www.clarku.edu/gsom/currentstudents/advising/mba.cfm  and verifying your completed courses in CU Web  https://prodssb.clarku.edu/pls/prod/twbkwbis.P_WWWLogin   .
  2. Plan your courses for the year, using both fall and spring schedules to create best schedule possible http://www.clarku.edu/gsom/currentstudents/courses/schedules.cfm  .
  3. Review your plan with your advisor either by phone or email http://www.clarku.edu/gsom/currentstudents/advising/index.cfm .
  4. Mark the first date/time of registration to ensure you enroll as soon as registration opens and you get into the courses of your choice.  If you wait, some courses fill and you will need to have alternatives.
  5. Make sure you have your payment plan and method confirmed http://www.clarku.edu/gsom/currentstudents/tuition/pay.cfm  .

Take some time to review the updates on the policies and procedures webpage http://www.clarku.edu/gsom/currentstudents/forms/policyinformation.cfm , we have organized the information here in a new more user friendly format.  In particular, you should note the late fee incurred if you register or change your registration on or after August 27th.

Announcements

When you return in the fall you will notice some changes on the first floor of Carlson Hall.  The GSOM computer lab has been repurposed as a student lounge/lab area thanks to a generous donation from a Clark alum (watch the Digest for dedication and reception details).

Join us in welcoming our new full-time tenure track faculty member, Zhihong (Rita) Wang.  You can read about her background and courses she will be teaching once she arrives here http://www.clarku.edu/gsom/faculty/facultybio.cfm?id=903&progid=20& .

We have a few other faculty changes to mention.  Sondra Vitols accepted a position with an investment firm and will not be back to teach for us this year.  Steve Ng will be joining us as a full-time visiting faculty member for the year.    Will O’Brien also joins as a full-time visiting lecturer.

Our new GSOM Dean has arrived!  Catherine Usoff has joined us and we hope you will be able to attend a reception we are having for you to meet her in early September.  Watch for a detailed announcement in the GSOM Digest of Messages next month.  See her welcome back note below.

See you on August 27th for the first week of classes!

Andrea Aiello

Associate Dean, Academic & Student Services

Hello from the GSOM Dean:

For those of you who may not have heard, I was privileged to be selected as the Dean of GSOM this past spring.  I started my new job on June 1 and so far have been busy meeting new people, and learning about everything that makes Clark and GSOM special.  Prior to coming to GSOM, I was a professor and department chair at Bentley University, where I worked for 19 years.   I taught and did research in the accounting and business processes and systems disciplines.   This summer I have mostly been working with the staff since there are not many faculty or students around.   I don’t have to tell you that we have a group of very dedicated and talented staff at GSOM.  They are busy preparing for your arrival in the fall so you will be able to make the most of your continuing studies.

On a personal note, I just returned from summer vacation with my family (husband, 17-year-old son and 22-year old daughter) to Oregon.  We went to the Olympic Track and Field trials.  It was great fun to watch all of the elite athletes compete for the top three spots in each event so they could travel to London to represent the US in the Olympics.  I was so impressed with the amount of time and effort each athlete must have put in just to qualify for the chance to compete.  I could also feel the pain of a few who fell during a preliminary race, or just missed one of the top three spots by hundredths of a second.  Each in our own way, we are preparing for our races – you are studying for a graduate degree so you can advance in your career, or I am working hard to be the type of leader the GSOM community deserves.  With hard work, good intentions, and perseverance, we will be successful!

I look forward to welcoming you in the fall as well as working more closely with our world class faculty.   I hope you are taking the time this summer to travel, recharge, and/or spend time with family and friends,  and that you are looking forward, as I am, to a dynamic and rewarding academic year.

See you soon!  Catherine Usoff
