Winter is coming: Stay warm while staying sustainable

The chilly weather is upon us, and nobody wants to be caught in the cold. Here are a few tips for a warm and sustainable fall/winter:

  • Close and lock all windows: Without locking your windows, you may be exposed to a cold draft from outside without even realizing it!
  • Keep your shades/curtains down at night: Most heat escapes through windows and doors; by keeping the shades down at night, you can limit how much escapes.
  • Remove any air conditioners: Speaking of heat escaping through windows, an AC unit can facilitate this; if you need one on campus removed and stored for the next summer, contact Facilities at x7566.
  • If you have a programmable thermostat, set a schedule: Heat up your space just before you arrive and turn down the heat just before you leave. You’ll be warm the whole time you’re there, and won’t be wasting energy to heat up an empty space. For help with programming a thermostat on campus, contact Facilities at x7566.
  • Bundle up! If you’re missing any winter gear, check out the Thrift Store for hats, scarves, mittens, coats, etc.
