GSOM Student Council Election

The time has come for the 2016/2017 GSOM Student Council Elections! This post is meant to provide you with information about each position, as well as encourage you to begin thinking about the election process, which will start on February 22, 2016 with self-nominations for positions. This is a great opportunity for students to exercise their leadership skills in order to continue to improve Clark’s Graduate School of Management and help shape it into the best place it can be. Serving in a leadership position like those on the Student Council strengthen skill sets that will help to make you successful in your future job search.

In order to be considered for Student Council office, students should have:

  • A passion for leadership
  • Be currently enrolled in a GSOM graduate program
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0, and
  • Not received any academic sanctions nor been involved with any disciplinary actions.

Below find the descriptions of the positions:

President- The President is ultimately responsible for executing a strategic plan that improves the overall quality of life of all GSOM students. He/She shall lead the council in a fiscally responsible and professional manner. The President shall ensure that the students’ needs are met through SC sponsored activities and events. He/She shall lead the team of student council officers and work with each officer individually, as needed, to accomplish the council’s goals and strategic initiatives for said year. The President shall also be responsible for representing the views and concerns of the student body to the GSOM administration and the Clark University community. He/She shall assist the GSOM administration to improve the quality of teaching in certain areas and maintain high quality teaching in others. He/She shall assist the GSOM administration to create and/or improve professional opportunities for the students. He/She shall help improve communication, foster a spirit of participation and promote transparency between GSOM students and the administration. The President may appoint members to a steering committee and appoint a steering committee chair as he/she deems necessary to accomplish the strategic initiatives of the student council.

Vice President – The Vice President shall support the President’s efforts and involvement with the Administration. In addition, he/she shall be responsible for internal oversight of the council’s internal communication and financial reporting. The Vice President shall also take the lead on certain projects / strategic initiatives as agreed upon between him/her and the President.

General Secretary – The General Secretary takes the minutes of the meetings, publishes them within 48 hours; coordinates the meetings; sends out email reminders for the meetings; takes attendance; is responsible for all written communication to the student body; is responsible for creating and collecting the liability waiver forms for the bus and/or all activities; keeps track/updates the GSOM student leadership list; and makes any amendments to the Constitution and/or the by-laws; organizes the electronic voting process; as well as any other formal record keeping / written documentation that the team needs.

Treasurer – The Treasurer works closely with the President to prepare the student council annual budget. He/she is responsible for making monthly budget reports to the team at the council meetings. He/she is responsible for requesting and reviewing budget reports from the GSOM student group treasurers at least once per semester; and meeting with them once per semester or as often as needed. The Treasurer is responsible for meeting with GSOM’s Director of Finance as often as necessary to facilitate the funding of SC sponsored events.

Media & Events Planner – The Media / Events Planner works closely with the President to organize and sponsor events that support the strategic initiatives of the student council and meet the needs of the students’ interests and/or requests. The Media & Events Planner also serves as GSOM SC’s Student Representative to the Graduate Student Association (GSA) of Clark. He/She attends regularly scheduled GSA meetings and relays this information back to the team and the GSOM student body.
