Sustainable Campus Enterprise Financial Intern for Fall ’15 & Spring ’16

Reports to: Business Managers, Community Thrift Store and The Local Root

Supervisors: Jenny Isler, Director of Sustainability Clark University and Amy Whitney, Director of Innovation & Entrepreneurship, GSOM

Position Description:

The intern will prepare timely and accurate financial reports and complete data entry, analysis and reports for two sustainable student-run enterprises the Community Thrift Store and The Local Root. Working with the graduate student business managers and undergraduate operations managers, the intern will provide continuous support to track and assess the financial performance and success of these enterprises, and provide meaningful recommendations for improvement in practice or policy based on sound financial analysis.

Position Responsibilities:

  • To advise and assist management team to monitor and improve financial success; including:
    • Review business model and establish weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual sales targets and expense projections;
    • Provide timely financial and business reports; data entry and other requirements
    • Create, evaluate, and disseminate monthly profit and loss statements
    • Create, evaluate, disseminate and revise weekly sales analyses
    • Support the budget process with financial projections;
    • Co-facilitate implementation of financial and associated strategies; measure impact
    • Assist in communicating financial goals and results to staff and volunteers.
  • To advise and assist the management team and employees to improve operations including:
    • Collaborate with the management team to review and improve retail operations that help enterprises meet their financial targets and provide a smooth operational flow;
    • Review current financial management tools, assess their functionality and validity, improve/replace as needed;
    • Co-facilitate and direct implementation of operations strategies that will impact financial performance and evaluate for effectiveness;
    • Conduct analyses as requested to assess inventory management, distribution and pricing strategies, target markets, and overhead expenses.
