Sustainability Consulting Graduate Assistant for Professor Will O’Brien

Professor Will O’Brien is looking to initiate relationships in Beijing, China in 2013 which will enable GSOM faculty to help Chinese organizations; e.g., businesses, non-profits and governmental agencies to become environmentally sustainable.  The project has multiple phases and deliverables. The graduate assistant will:

  • Be trained by Professor Will O’Brien on Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Business Leader Program. http://sustainablebusinessleader.org
  • Translate of 100 PPT slides from English to Chinese; this will be used in meetings and/or a Green Business Seminar in Beijing in mid-July 2013.
  • Establish contacts in Beijing with Chinese governmental agencies re: environmental sustainability. This will include conducting of Skype sessions with Prof. O’Brien to establish the relationships. The Graduate Assistant will need to provide translation support for these sessions.
  • Arrange meetings with Prof. O’Brien and these agencies to be held during his visit there in mid -July 2013.
  • Schedule a Green Business Seminar sponsored by a Chinese governmental agency on July 22nd during which Prof. O’Brien will speak and the Graduate Assistant will translate. As part of the project, the student would need to be in Beijing to translate during the any meetings that take place on Friday, July 19th, as well as during the Green Business Workshop on Monday, July 22nd.
  • Later in July, develop a report re: the Green Business Seminar which will includes the outcome of the seminar as well as a listing of all attendees including name, organization and their email addresses.

Qualifications: Students earning their MBA, MBA in Social Change or Sustainability, Dual Degree or MSF are encouraged to apply. Requires a self-starter, fluent in English with excellent communication and networking skills. The qualified individual is one who understands the basics of Sustainable Development, and has connections or is able to establish connections with Chinese governmental agencies in support of environmental sustainability.  The right candidate will be committed to helping Chinese organizations reduce operating expenses as well as environmental footprints.

Position information: Time commitment: 10 hours per week for the remainder of the spring semester. Additional hours during the summer through the end of July; hours to be determined. Pay rate: $10 per hour. Note: As mentioned above, the student is expected to be in Beijing, China on Friday, July 19th and Monday, July 22nd. Transportation and living expenses will not be covered; the student is expected to pay these costs himself.

Requirements: Applicants should be proficient in using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PPT). Applicants should have self motivation and the ability to work with little supervision, have networking skills, and be able to organize events.
