Ten ways to ‘fall’ into sustainability

Fall has arrived in New England, and now we can think about how to adjust our day-to-day actions to save energy, improve our indoor spaces, and maintain health and wellness.

  1. Close and lock your windows before you leave your inside space. Locking is key because windows can slide back open and let in cold air.
  2. Pull the shades down at night to keep the heat from the day inside, and think about investing in insulated curtains.
  3. Remove air conditioning units from your windows.
  4. Fix gaps around your windows with caulk or simply put in a work order for the Physical Plant to fix them.
  5. Move furniture away from heating units so the heat can travel well throughout your space.
  6. Unplug items, including lamps and chargers, when you’re not using them, and think about switching to energy-efficient lighting.
  7. Be on the lookout for handmade tea at The Local Root’s weekly farm-stand.
  8. Get a stylish, affordable new sweater at the Community Thrift Store.
  9. Take a free Clark Yoga class at the fitness center to warm up, stretch, and find peace of mind.
  10. Take a hike in the Hadwen Arboretum to get exercise, take in the fresh air, and gaze at the fall colors.
