Wow! So much has happened in the sustainability landscape this year at Clark. Here are some highlights:
- Trash cans were removed from JC & Sackler classrooms. Centralized trash and recycling in common spaces saves on trash liners and increases recycling there by 30%
- Campus waste diversion rate set a new record of 55%
- Native plant and edible gardens were installed in Alden Quad, next to Dodd and Wright Halls, and outside the Goddard library
- Many buildings including graduate housing, the Dolan Field House, Traina, and Estabrook received energy efficiency improvements
- Styrafoam recycling became an option with a local vendor, ReFoamIt
- The Local Root began its mobile market to better serve the campus community with fresh, local food
- The Community Thrift Store moved into its new location on Main Street with a whole new DIY look
- Clark began an arrangement with SolarFlair’s solar farm in Charlton and saw a significant shave off of greenhouse gas emissions
- Faculty and staff received Energy Saver Calendars to encourage behavior change around office energy use.
- The Green Office Auditors completed 6 audits of faculty and staff offices on campus
- Clark broke ground on the construction of a Net Zero building across Main Street which will feature solar panels, efficient energy management systems, water conservation measures, and much more!
- Clark brought on several new faculty members with teaching and research interests in sustainability
- Room Heating Cards were put in all residential hall rooms with tips and instructions on efficient heating
- Compost bins were introduced into 5 more halls and the AC so provide a way for Clarkies to compost where many spend a lot of their time!
- SSF awarded funds for five more water bottle filling stations; three new ones appeared over summer
- Clark hosted the second annual Earth Week with over 50 different events, including an all-day Climate Change Teach-In
