We often consider the story of the origin of a masterpiece as the key to grasping its meaning and value. While such a perspective is undeniably important, it is not the whole story. Any great work continues to develop and deepen long after its initial creation. In this regard, as in so many others, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is remarkable. This talk will explore not just how the Ninth came to be, but also where it has been over the last two centuries, and what its music can mean today.
