Creative Destruction and Great Transitions: Emerging Alternative Pathways in the 21st Century

The seminar will explore the aspects of the world systems, crisis’s and conflicts that engulf the contemporary conjuncture. It will focus on Inequality, Unemployment and Ecological unSustainability as institutional anachronisms of the global political economy. In suggesting emerging alternatives, a focus will be placed on the fast emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS). An elaboration of counter-hegemony and neo-liberalism will serve to illustrate developmental challenges of the second decade of the 21st Century. Deriving from these and an engagement with the narrative of the ‘great transition,’ some further collaborative and socially engaged research directions are advanced.
