April 4: Caren Grown talks about gender mainstreaming and foreign aid

Promoting Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment: Is Foreign Aid Effective?
A talk by Caren Grown, Ph.D.

Prof. Grown is the former Senior Gender Advisor at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID, 2011-13), where she led the agency’s efforts to integrate broader gender issues in foreign assistance, and is currently the co-director of the Program on Gender Analysis in Economics at American University. Previously she co-directed (with Diane Elson) the Gender Equality and Economy Program at the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College and was a senior associate of the Task Force 3 of the UN Millennium Project on gender quality and women’s empowerment. She is the author of several books on gender equality, poverty, public finance and development and has published in World Development, Journal of International Development, Feminist Economics, Health Policy and Planning, and The Lancet.
