Economist Johnston participates in stormwater workshop

Professor of economics Robert Johnston served as steering committee member, moderator and speaker for the day-long workshop “Current Stormwater Concerns and Solutions” held on March 12 at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). The workshop was organized by the Water Resources Research Center at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in cooperation with Clark University and WPI.

The workshop’s goal was to bring together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to identify challenges, opportunities, and next steps in managing the region’s stormwater. Johnston moderated the session “Regulations and Policy Stormwater and Land Use: Issues and Concerns,” and spoke on quantifying the economic advantages of riparian restoration at the “Solutions Stormwater and Land Use: Issues and Concerns session.

Johnston’s research interests include the valuation of non-market resources and ecosystem services, benefit transfer and meta-analysis, management of aquatic resources, land preservation, and tourism economics. He currently serves as director of the Marsh Institute.
