Solo exhibition by Toby Sisson

A new solo exhibition of work by assistant professor of studio art Toby Sisson opened February 24 at the Mildred I. Washington Art Gallery on the campus of Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, NY. The show, titled “Toby Sisson: Then & Now,”  includes mixed media paintings, drawings and prints. Read a review.

In her artist’s statement Sisson explains that the show “charts the evolution of my visual vocabulary over the last dozen years, quickly transitioning from observation to informed intuition. Reaching beyond representation, I reimagine a lexicon of ancient symbols with dots, dashes and cellular forms. Quoting these timeless marks connects the primal with the contemporary, past with present. Notions of otherness, instability, and hybridity are also embedded in my compositions as these states reflect the mutable nature of life in a globalized world, ever changing and mysterious.”
