STAND plans activities for Dance-A-Thon Week of Awareness, Feb. 18 – 22

As a genocide-prevention group on campus, one of our pillars of activism is education. We would like to take the Dance-A-Thon as an opportunity to educate and raise awareness about genocide and conflict. Each of these events is an opportunity to learn.Attending any event will grant you a raffle ticket that can be redeemed during the Dance-A-Thon for a chance to win a prize or, if you are a dance participant, 15 minute break for your entire team!

 

LUMO Screening

Learn more about one of our fundraising organizations, HEAL Africa. LUMO (2006) is a documentary film following one woman’s story through her healing journey at HEAL Africa as she recovers from a fistula formed from a violent sexual assault. Learn more by watching the trailer.

 

 Life of an Activist: Student Panel

Welcome two incredible graduate student activists, Sara Brown and Siobhan Kelley, as they share their stories and experiences as student activists in genocide prevention. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

 

 Meet New Lands Farm!

Welcome visitors from Luther Social Services to talk about the refugee farmer collective, New Lands Farm, another one of our fundraising organizations.

 

 “The Letter” Screening hosted by StAR
  • Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m.
  • Jefferson 218

Clark Student Action for Refugees (StAR) hosts a screening of “The Letter: An American Town and the ‘Somali Invasion'” (2003), directed by Ziad H. Hamzeh. This film follows the abrupt relocation of 1,100 Somali refugees to the predominately white community of Lewiston, Maine and the reactions of the town.
